Dad’s Advice

When I was a little girl and someone would hurt my feelings my dad would sit me down. He would ask me questions about what type of person I was, like “are you kind?”, “are you honest?”, “are you a good friend?”. I would answer yes to all the questions. He would tell me the other person just doesn’t know these things. He would explain to me that I shouldn’t change who I am for others and I could choose not to play with people that are mean.
I try to be me every day, I try to be fair, honest, loving, forgiving, and understanding. It is harder some days when I read things from people I used to admire or respect and they are filled with such resentment or are bitter towards the world around them.
Today I choose to remember my dad’s questions “are you kind?”, “are you honest?”, “are you a good friend?”. and I also choose not to play with people that are mean.
